It was designed from the start as an RTS with little to no unit micromanagement, so it plays like a board game that just happens to be a computer game because tons of rapid calculations are going on under the hood. You still have to be quick in that game, and it takes some learning because its systems are so unique, but once you understand the general concept the challenge is much more in decision-making (reading and responding to numbers, mostly) than in the mechanics of moving pieces or handling a complicated UI. I like to describe it as Catan for high-frequency traders. If you are willing to try an offbeat economy-centric RTS that is all about selecting building locations and research priorities while monitoring numbers, without handling any workers or armies on the field, Offworld Trading Company is something unique and special. There was a re-release on Steam a few years ago, so it should run on modern PCs. You could fool around a lot in games that were long and slow there's a lot of stuff in the game but you can take it patiently, and micromanagement isn't all that intense, from what I can remember. Rise of Nations was a good pick for this back in the day, especially for those with some background in turn-based empire builders like Civ, from which new players might have an existing fluency in mechanics like borders and the age-based research progression. Multiplayer is harder to get into, though, because of the complexity of the heroes and factions so I would recommend getting a handle on RTS building/unit basics in WC3 (movement, hotkeys) and working up to the elegance of SC2. The units are chunky and few in number, you are encouraged to keep your armies small, you don't need to manage very many buildings, the campaign has a lot of objective-driven variety (it's in WC3, particularly the Frozen Throne expansion, where Blizzard truly begins to treat each mission like its own game, a school of campaign design they would later elaborate and perfect in StarCraft II), and the single-player difficulty was tuned for an age when nobody else really knew RTS basics either. 
Warcraft III is a good recommendation (in single-player, anyway). VR is a great platform for strategy games. I would miss being able to play with others though. Can you still get it on pc? And does it support LAN and CPU combo matches? Do the servers still work?ĭino Frontier had a fantastic demo. Halo wars always seemed interesting, and I remember people complained about its simplicity, so perhaps I should try it. I'm not sold on the dragons, but I might try that next. I've tried dawn of war, age of empires, cultures, Stronghold 2, sim city(if that counts) starcraft, and some others but I didn't click with any of them, really. I sometimes wish there was just a more detailed and expanded version of that same game. I'm not sure what it is about that game, but it seems to strike a great balance with castle management and military conquest without being too easy, difficult, or complex. And complex micromanagement and production methods turn me off pretty quickly.īut I would still like to find another one that captured my heart like the original Stronghold. I have trouble keeping track of too many things at once. So I have always admired the concept and sheer scale of RTS games, however, most of the ones I've tried make my head spin.
